It's the dead of winter and my kids have been watching more TV than normal. But who can deny the beauty of family movie night?? It's so fun to make the popcorn, get out the blankets and curl up on the couch with no phones and no distractions. We've been pulling out the classics lately, like E.T., The Sandlot, and even Big. I couldn't handle one more bad animated film On Demand. The kids have been really into it. And yes, things were a bit looser when these movies were made, so they have heard a few swears and seen teenagers drinking beer, but I saw this when I was young too. It's going to be ok. Don't worry, I fast-forwarded the mild sex scene in Big.
When the kids were watching The Sandlot, I had to giggle when I saw them cover their eyes during a nervous situation (the mom is talking to her son about the Babe Ruth baseball), like, it was just too much to watch. It was so cute and also gave me flashbacks to my own family movie nights growing up.
I'm talking about my tween years when I was still home for family movie nights on Fridays and we had graduated to PG-13 movies. I still remember excusing myself to the bathroom and waiting it out because the song, "I'm too Sexy" played during the montage scene in Encino Man. That movie came out in 1992, people! I was 12 and the word "sexy" was just too much, I guess. Fingers crossed for Nora and Sam!! Also, it makes me think of this (very) hilarious article from The Onion.
